This event marks the fourth time the Association has organized a US youth arts group to visit China, and is also an important milestone in US-China educational cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative's people-to-people exchanges.

Shanghai, China, 6 June 2025 — Under the auspices of the American Chinese Cultural and Arts Exchange Association (ACCAEA), the Utah Youth Dance Troupe presented “Crafting Dreams through Dance,” a 2025 China–US youth cultural and artistic exchange performance, today in the East Hall of Shanghai Art & Design Academy. The event marks the Association's fourth visit to China with an American youth arts ensemble and represents a major milestone in people-to-people cooperation between the two countries under the Belt and Road Initiative framework.

Cultural exchange, art as a bridge

Cultural exchange, with art as the bridge

As a core part of the Shanghai Arts and Crafts Vocational College's International Exchange Week, this event was not only a performance but also a profound cultural dialogue. Guided by their Chinese partners, the American teenage dancers experienced firsthand traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage techniques such as cloisonné enamel, woodblock printing, and Shanghai-style paper cutting, appreciating the unique charm of Eastern aesthetics.

The president of the US-China Cultural and Arts Exchange Association stated, "We believe that art is a universal language. Today, young dancers from Utah and students from Shanghai are weaving bridges of understanding through dance and handicrafts. This is the fourth time the association has led American teenagers to visit China, and each exchange deepens our understanding and respect for Chinese culture."

As the centerpiece of Shanghai Art & Design Academy's International Exchange Week, the program was far more than a concert; it was an in-depth cultural dialogue. Guided by their Chinese peers, the young American dancers tried their hands at cloisonné, wood-block watermarks and Shanghai-style paper-cutting, experiencing first-hand the distinctive charm of traditional Chinese intangible heritage.

“Art is the universal language of humankind,” said the President of ACCAEA. “Today, dancers from Utah and students from Shanghai wove a bridge of understanding through dance and craftsmanship. Each of our four visits has deepened our respect for and knowledge of Chinese culture.”

A two-screen performance, dancing between East and West.

Two-act program dances East and West

This performance is divided into two main parts:

The first chapter, "Dance Across the Ocean," showcases the diverse facets of American dance. Dance elites from Utah's elementary, middle, and high schools and universities presented a rich program of professional skill, including the passionate samba, the elegant and romantic waltz, the free and improvisational jazz, and the energetic street dance, demonstrating the fruitful results of arts education for American youth.

The second chapter, "Dance and Shadow Intertwined," witnessed a creative dialogue between Chinese and American art. Dancers from Utah collaborated with students from the Shanghai Academy of Arts and Crafts and the Affiliated Dance School of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, incorporating Eastern and Western elements into their choreography to create a refreshing dance language that interpreted the infinite possibilities of cultural fusion.

The performance unfolded in two movements:

Act I, “Rhythms Across the Ocean,” showcased the diversity of American dance. Elite dancers from elementary, middle-school and university levels in Utah delivered professional-level samba, elegant waltz, improvisational jazz and high-energy street dance, illustrating the rich results of US youth arts education.

Act II, “Intertwining Shadows,” witnessed a creative dialogue between Chinese and American artists. Utah dancers shared the stage with students from Shanghai Art & Design Academy and the affiliated dance school of Shanghai Theater Academy, blending Eastern and Western elements in choreography that forged a refreshing dance vocabulary and illustrated the limitless possibilities of cultural convergence.
